Bricklayer

Your bricklayer is the guy or company that will obvioulsy be carrying out the brick work element of your extension. Your builder will take care of making sure your bricklayer has all the materials he needs if you are employing a builder, but if you are managing the project and employing sub-contractors you will need to liase with your bricklayer to make sure he has all the materials he needs.

As with all trades, it is advisable to split the bricklayers work into sections for stage payment purposes.

When on site a bricklayer is likely to need or use the following materials.

  • bricks
  • blocks
  • sand
  • cement
  • insulation
  • water
  • wall ties
  • insulation clips
  • brick acid for cleaning
  • frame ties
  • dummy frames for windows and doors

And will use the following tools

  • trowel
  • spirit level - various lengths
  • dumpy level / theodolite
  • bucket
  • brush
  • safety gloves
  • corner profiles
  • gauge rods - usually made on site from timber
  • safety boots
  • pointing trowel
  • joint rake
  • pointing iron
