Studwork / Stud Walls

These are invariably constructed from timber (there are more commercial metal stud systems available). A timber sole plate is laid out and fixed to the floor with uprights then fixed at regular centres, usually about 400mm. to the ceiling where they are then also fixed to a ceiling plate.

To help stabilise the structure, horizontal 'noggins' are then fitted. Stud walls are more common on suspended timber floors where the joists underneath can be double or trebled to help support them. It is good practice to insulate a stud wall for sound, especially if a bedroom is adjacent to a bathroom.
